REVIEW An independent review
of Chinese Herbal Medicine: The Formulary® by
Miki Shima, O.M.D., American Journal of Acupuncture,
Fall 1995:

"...looking up formulas and herbs on a computer is
a whole other experience... It is the first comprehensive computer
application in the field of traditional Chinese herbal medicine
and it also goes way beyond being merely a database... It is
a very intelligent program which can "think" with
the physician in both Western and Eastern ways... I find it
very user friendly. I could move around the program within a
week with ease. If not very familiar with Chinese medicine,
one can enter the program using western diagnosis, and that
will help to find formulas and to understand Chinese herbal
medicine. If familiar with the ways traditional Chinese medicine
works, The Formulary is a sheer joy. One can find formulas
with respect to Zang-fu organ imbalance, the Six Pathogenic
Factors, Three Burners, Channels, etc. Furthermore, one can
create any combination of etiologies one may want to explore...
and be led to the correct formulas to prescribe... It is helpful
for educational purposes. Especially for me as a teacher of
Chinese herbal medicine, the program saves me hundreds of hours
preparing my lecture notes, because I can cut and paste together
bits and pieces of relevant information in order to compose
very informative teaching materials for my workshops... I also
think that the program can be one of the best educational tools
for students preparing for board examinations."Chinese
Herbal Medicine: The Formulary® provides categorized
symptom information.

the clinic:

At Observation

Confirms accuracy. Chinese Herbal Medicine: The
Formulary suggests follow-up questions to confirm the accuracy
of clinical observations. If symptoms and signs associated with
the formula(s) match with the patient, the accuracy of observations
will be confirmed. If there is not a match, the original observations
may require reassessment.

Clearly articulates problems and sets clear priorities.
Detailed lists of symptoms and signs facilitate clearly articulated
problems. Important key symptom descriptions lead to rich veins
of interconnections and formulas that provide a good match with
the patient. Choice of secondary symptoms leads to less appropriate
answers and indicate a need for reassessing priorities.

Completes observations. Lists of keywords related to
your case, and lists of specific symptoms and signs suggest
additional questions needed to make information gathering complete
and thorough.

Identifies patterns. Chinese Herbal Medicine: The
Formulary finds all symptoms and signs associated with those
you identify. This list can then be organized by Pathophysiological
Category (e.g., GYN, GI, Pulse Dx, Tongue Dx) or searched by
keywords in order to rapidly explore patterns of symptoms and
signs in an orderly way.

Finds Mistakes. Incorrect observations among a pattern
of correct ones can be isolated by Chinese Herbal Medicine:
The Formulary, which will search for symptoms and signs
associated with the symptoms you have identified with the highest
confidence, add a second symptom, and so on. If an incongruent
item is added, it will become obvious.

At Diagnosis

References East and West. Comprehensive cross-references
allow easy access from both the perspectives of Chinese energetic
conditions, actions, pulse, tongue signs and herb lore, as well
as from Western biomedical disease names, standard patho-physiological
categories and anatomical regions.

Confirms good diagnosis. Chinese Herbal Medicine:
The Formulary indicates correct diagnostic conclusions from
empirical symptom and sign evidence, by a search for well-matched
formulas. An incorrect diagnosis will yield no match.
Diagnosis
from key symptoms. Small groups or patterns of general symptoms
and signs can be used to find energetic conditions. conversely,
highly specific "idiopathic" symptoms or signs can
be used to find energetic conditions, then associated biomedical
diseases and symptoms can be organized, listed and matched with
the patient.

At Prescription

Quickly finds the best combinations of herbs and
formulas. The program clearly displays information about
the short list of potential candidates in a succinct and well-organized
way. in-depth information about a formula is available whenever
needed. You can search for modifications if necessary to customize
the formula and then print the prescription. Key information
is extracted, organized, linked and displayed graphically.

In-depth knowledge at your fingertips. Each formula
is connected by hundreds of lines of meaning to hundreds of
traditional formulas. This turns lines of meaning into allies,
instead of overwhelming details.

Compares and contrasts formulas. Chinese Herbal
Medicine: The Formulary can instantly compare and contrast
any two formulas to make clear what herbs, symptoms, signs,
conditions, chapters and action they have in common and what
properties are distinct. Your computer then graphically illustrates
the symptoms treated by that formula.

Consult with the masters. Chinese Herbal Medicine: The
Formulary will instantly compare your own herb combination
or full formula to thousands of classi
c formulas or hundreds of synergistic herb combinations to
find previous usage of the same or similar combinations.

For
students:

Put an ancient medical tradition at your fingertips.
The experience of past generations of physicians can be organized
to facilitate your understanding of complex issues. You'll
be able to explore the lines of meaning with the program and
develop a firm theoretical foundation for your practice.

Easily explore meanings of specific symptoms, conditions
or action phrases. Items specific to a particular topic
can be organized and listed. Chinese Herbal Medicine: The
Formulary gives you instant reference to the phrase chosen
and takes you there.

Rote memorization is made obsolete. Regular use of
Chinese Herbal Medicine: The Formulary promotes a strong
recall of the subject matter, and renders extensive rote memorization
of Chinese herbalism unnecessary. You can concentrate on seeing
patterns, asking questions and sharpening your judgment.

Learning Chinese medicine is made fun, creative, and more
efficient. You will learn more about Chinese herbal medicine
than you ever dreamed possible. Learning is made interactive,
immediate and fascinating. Animated pages make formulas come
alive by painting a picture of symptomatology treated for
each formula. Chinese Herbal Medicine: The Formulary
enhances your ability to organize your studies, and to research
and write your essays.

- For
teachers/lecturers/writers:

Deeply layered herbal tradition are made real and tangible.
The experience of the past is available in a more complete form
than a linear format book allows. This multidimensional program
approximates (more closely than any text) the reality of brilliant
scholar physicians as they developed and applied formulas clinically.

Once inaccessible aspects now easily explored. the program
allows you to do thorough research in a tiny fraction of the
time required by the old text approach. Thousands of interconnections
and several views of traditional information are opened up to
you, allowing new possibilities in the analysis, reference and
study of herbal medicine.

Reference and analyze thousands of topics in new, insightful
ways. Chinese Herbal Medicine: The Formulary is 10,000 books
in one program. You can instantly reorganize the text into a
monograph addressing your specific needs. Unlike old manual
methods (with inadequate cross-referencing capabilities), you
can always find information applicable to your topic.

Create educational exercises, clinical cases and essay topics.
the program can be used as a flexible resource to develop a
wide variety of new educational materials and interactive thinking
experiences for students. Topics can be researched at any level
of difficulty up to and including peer review journals to discover
and analyze new creative associations and insights.

Easily communicate with patients, students and readers.
Copy any information you desire from the program to a general
word processing file. Use the extracted information as handouts
for your classes, writing articles or researching books. You
will be able to e-mail or fax prescriptions to herb companies
as Order. You can even order custom prescriptions by telephone
using built-in code numbers for formulas and herbs!
